HOW TO READ FACES
Winner
of The Pat Lowther Award, 1986
"it is the body which dominates this book, in love and in suffering. ....an
incisive and disturbing book." Stephen Scobie
"a collection of
exceedingly beautiful poetry...often painful in their spareness and intensity...very
much a private book. But it's written with a clarity and emotional power
that allows its inwardness to touch others."

Christmas at Christina Lake
Falling asleep slowly, the short couch
like an embrace, the quilt soft at my chin,
past my shoulder the one lamp by the table
looks over your shoulder
you are cleaning the oboe, it takes hours
tiny dismantled parts
spread out on newspaper, your fingers moving among them
no one else awake, no sound
except, sometimes, the small comfortable tick of metal
on metal, as though you were playing a secret game
with intricate rules, and one of them was silence.
And the deep snow
pressing on the roof, pressing on the sills
and still falling.
