STRANGER THAN A WOLF - the human head in clay
The human head is stranger, and a thousand times more mysterious, than the head of a wolf.
- Alberto Giacometti
Texts and concept: Heather Spears
Sculpture: Elly Scheepens
Photography: Virginia Boyd
Working from texts and drawings by Spears, the process of modelling a human head from a skull is minutely and beautifully documented.
Viewers can follow the process as skull, and then each muscle, tells its story. A mirror encourages viewers to mimic and explore facial expressions. With added features and skin, the head of a young woman emerges, true to how she must have looked in life.
Both educational and very beautiful. The text extends the viewer's appreciation of the numinous image of the human head, central to art in almost all times and cultures.
